Can Alcohol Companies Become a B Corporation?

After two years of hard work, Boochcraft was awarded our B Corporation (B Corp) certification in May of 2022, making us the first hard kombucha brand to achieve this status. We started this process back in 2020 in an effort to take the next step toward our mission of cultivating a sustainable connection between business and well-being. At Boochcraft, our focus is on finding a balance between the planet, people, and profit. We hold ourselves to a higher standard for sustainability and social impact and continue to set the bar high for what it means to give a shit.

So, what exactly is a B Corp?

Certified B Corporations are defined as “businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.” A variety of different businesses can achieve this status by meeting (and exceeding!) guidelines set by B Lab, an international non-profit organization whose mission is to shift the global economy from a system that profits few, to one that benefits all.

What are the qualifications to become a Certified B Corp?

During the certification process, B Lab measures a company’s entire social and environmental impact. They must meet high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on multiple factors including employee benefits, charitable giving, supply chain practices and input materials. To achieve certification, a company must:
  1. Demonstrate high social and environmental performance by achieving a B Impact Assessment score of 80 or above and passing our risk review (We proudly scored a 91.1).
  2. Make a legal commitment by changing their corporate governance structure to be accountable to all stakeholders, not just shareholders, and achieve benefit corporation status if available in their jurisdiction.
  3. Exhibit transparency by allowing information about their performance measured against B Lab’s standards to be publicly available on their B Corp profile on B Lab’s website.

You can read a more in-depth explanation about these processes here. We know it can appear complicated, but the end goal is worth the work!

What does Boochcraft do to meet these standards?

We’re glad you asked! Sustainability: We source as much of our produce and herbs as possible from local and small family farms, ensuring the freshest, most flavorful ingredients go into every batch of Boochcraft and into your hands. Some of our valued farms include J.R. Organics and Charlie’s Produce. We juice our fruit in-house, composting every scrap and paper towel (we’re talking over 1M pounds of composted fruits a year!). We then supply local farms with this compost to promote healthy soil regeneration and replace chemical fertilizers. We donate 1% of our gross sales to fund projects that help create a sustainable global community and are proud members of 1% For the Planet. We are totally wind powered! We implemented a water recapture system to conserve water usage during the brewing process. This helps us save thousands of gallons of water every week! Our People: We support our employees with a variety of benefits and training to ensure safe and mutually beneficial processes. Some of these include:

401K matching
