Betcha didn’t know kiwi is a berry, did you? The edible fruit of a woody vine that originated in Northern China, the fuzzy fruit was rebranded by farmers in New Zealand due to its resemblance to—you guessed it—the kiwi bird.

For this spring release, we’re venturing out to Wild River Farms in Marysville, CA, where Travis Noland’s family has operated the largest organic kiwi farm in California since 1964. With its bright green tropical fruit flavor, we love the ripe, juicy tanginess of these power-packed delicious little berries.

Our Heirloom Series is the culmination of our team’s efforts to craft small batch recipes celebrating single origin harvest and sustainable organic family farms. Stay tuned for more Heirloom moments throughout the year!

Notes from our brewer & Lead R+D Scientist, Kyle Oliver:

We wanted to do an heirloom berry, and we think that kiwi is the most fun and unexpected berry (did you know it’s a berry?!). We added vanilla to make it more creamy vs. tangy — tropical, smooth, easy-drinking. Kiwi comes in at the beginning where you get the brightness of the kiwi itself, the date comes in at the middle with a sweet, molasses-like flavor. Vanilla creaminess on the exhale: inferred sweetness without actual added “sweetness”, you know?

We love kiwi because it’s at once sweet and tart — it “bites back” in a good way. It dances around on the tongue. It’s quickly becoming one of our favorite ingredients to play with and we hope you feel the same about drinking it! Cheers!
